OCCUPATION AND LIBERATION FROM 1928 TO 1946: In 1933, arrived in Germany Adolf Hitler to power. He was the leader of the Nazi Party, which promoted hatred of Jews. The party benefited from the resentment of many Germans about the humiliating way in which Germany was treated after the First World War. Hitler wanted Germany to make the most powerful country in Europe. First, he focused his attacks on Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, then he wanted to eliminate Germany's major opponent in Western Europe: France. In the attack on France would also Netherlands and Belgium occupied. On Friday May 10, 1940, many Dutch people were awakened by the roar of aircraft, exploding bombs and the rattle of tanks. German soldiers to the border were pulled over. The war had begun. The Dutch army was too weak to repel the German attack. After the Germans had bombed the center of Rotterdam, and threatened other cities the same treatment, decided to surrender the Dutch army command. The government and the queen had already fled to England. ..
Initially seemed to attack the occupation, but it soon became clear meant what unfreedom. Dutch men were forced to work in German factories. Also, people were imprisoned without trial in prisons and concentration camps. Especially Jews were persecuted. The Germans transported over 100,000 Jewish men, women and children in freight trains from the Netherlands to concentration camps, where most were killed.

The Germans were assisted by members of the National Socialist Movement (NSB), which had a similar ideology, and by hangers-on and profiteers. On the other side stood the opposition, which mainly got a lot of supporters at the end of the war. The bulk of the population was anti-German but passive.
In the autumn of 1944, the south of the country was liberated by Allied troops. The area above the great rivers (particularly the cities in the western provinces) first have had to deal with the hunger winter. By extreme food shortage weakened the population and were tens of thousands of people. In May 1945 the German commander signed the surrender and was liberated Netherlands. At that time the Dutch East Indies was still in the hands of the Japanese occupation forces. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.
